GOODREADS SYNOPSIS
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadowhunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by — and torn between — two best friends and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Why do I even do this to myself? Please don’t ask me why I inflict this level of pain on myself!!

I just love these books, and I’ve sucked myself in and now I can’t escape. HELP ME. This going to be the same as my Lord of Shadows review because I just don’t have enough words, lord help me when I get to book 3.

WHY YOU NEED TO READ THE INFERNAL DEVICES

  • The world!

Cassie has just created this awesome world. This is obviously 19th century London but it’s so well crafted and the way she’s weaved everything together is genius

  • The humour

These books are so freaking funny your pants will fall down. I’m not even kidding THEY ARE SO FUNNY I can’t even express. Most of her characters are super sarcastic and it’s just the best.

  • The fighting and battles

Cassie just writes her fight scenes in the best way. You’re never confused and it feels like you’re there because they’re so vivid

  • The characters

I’ve already talked about each of them but just,, they’re all SO GOOD!! I love all my babies and they all just care for each other, it’s beautiful. The banter is the best and they all protect each other, can you tell I want to go and live with them?

  • THE SHIPS

The freaking ships you guys!! I LOVE THEM ALL.I’m also talking about the friendships because they’re just as beautiful. I want to cry already. I just,, read these books!!

  • Tessa, Will, Jem and PAIN

Okay, all those other reasons are valid but this is probably the most important one. This trio has the most beautiful story you could imagine, it’ll keep you up at night crying just because you read a few quotes or listened to Saturn by Sleeping At Last no that wasn’t me, why would you think that. Okay but seriously that song, listen to it once you’ve read them. Their story is so freaking beautiful and my heart actually can’t handle it. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!

Spoilers ahead blog graphic-1
I don’t have too many spoiler-filled just yet, wait until book 3 but there are a few things I want to mention.
Nate is the freaking worst and I forgot how horrible he was. I’ve forgotten so much of this book. He just sucks.
THE DUCKS OMGGGGGGG I CAN’T EVEN.
Tessa (I prefer Tess) knows so little. She’s very much old-fashioned in this book compared to the Shadowhunters. If that makes any sense?
The scene at the end had me on my toes. I hate torture scenes, it puts my teeth on edge and I just,,, Gosh I hate Nate, treating Tess like that.
I LOVE WILL AND JEM SO MUCH!! They are beautiful and I will protect them with my life. The banter and the loving care. They just have the most beautiful story I don’t know how to cope!!
Of course Will is a dumbass but I of course understand but he was HARSH. My poor baby has to suffer too much!

“One must always be careful of books,” said Tessa, “and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

“You point your feet out too much when you walk,” Will went on. He was busy polishing an apple on his shirtfront, and appeared not to notice Tessa glaring at him. “Camille walks delicately. Like a faun in the woods. Not like a duck.”
“I do not walk like a duck.”
“I like ducks,” Jem observed diplomatically. “Especially the ones in Hyde Park.” He glanced sideways at Will; both boys were sitting on the edge of the high table, their legs dangling over the side. “Remember when you tried to convince me to feed poultry pie to the mallards in the park to see if you could breed a race of cannibal ducks?”
“They ate it too,” Will reminisced. “Bloodthirsty little beasts. Never trust a duck.”

“You know,” Gabriel said, “there was a time I thought we could be friends, Will.”
“There was a time I thought I was a ferret,” Will said, “but that turned out to be the opium haze. Did you know it had that effect? Because I didn’t.”

“If no one in the entire world cared about you, did you really exist at all?” – Tessa Gray

“Must you go? I was rather hoping you’d stay and be a ministering angel, but if you must go, you must.”
“I’ll stay,” Will said a bit crossly, and threw himself down in the armchair Tessa had just vacated. “I can minister angelically.”
“None too convincingly. And you’re not as pretty to look at as Tessa is,” Jem said, closing his eyes as he leaned back against the pillow.
“How rude. Many who have gazed upon me have compared the experience to gazing at the radiance of the sun.”
Jem still had his eyes closed. “If they mean it gives you a headache, they aren’t wrong.”

“Are you implying that shreds of my reputation remain intact?” Will demanded with mock horror. “Clearly I have been doing something wrong. Or not something wrong, as the case may be.”
He banged on the side of the carriage. “Thomas! We must away at once to the nearest brothel. I seek scandal and low companionship.”

“That was enterprising,” Will sounded nearly impressed.
Nate smiled. Tess shot him a furious look. “Don’t look pleased with yourself. When Will says ‘enterprising’ he means ‘morally deficient.'”
“No, I mean enterprising,” said Will. “When I mean morally deficient, I say, ‘Now, that’s something I would have done’.”

“I had such plans for this evening. The pursuit of blind drunkenness and wayward women was my goal. But alas, it was not to be. No sooner had I consumed my third drink in the Devil than I was accosted by a delightful small flower selling child who asked me for twopence for a daisy. The price seemed steep, so I refused. When I told the girl as much, she proceeded to rob me.”

“A little girl robbed you?” Tessa said.
“Actually, she wasn’t a little girl at all, as it turns out, but a midget in a dress with a penchant for violence, who goes by the name of Six-Fingered Nigel.”
“Easy mistake to make,” Jem said.”

“So you don’t ever get angry at him?”
Jem laughed out loud. “I would hardly say that. Sometimes I want to strangle him.”
“How on earth do you prevent yourself?”
“I go to my favorite place in London,” said Jem, “and I stand and look at the water, and I think about the continuity of life, and how the river rolls on, oblivious of the petty upsets in our lives.”
Tessa was fascinated. “Does that work?”
“Not really, but after that I think about how I could kill him while he slept if I really wanted to, and then I feel better.”

“Goodness,” Tessa said to the back of his head. “If you keep seeing Six-Fingered Nigel like this, he’ll expect you to declare your intentions.”

“It’s Will,” she said. “He’s being absolutely ridiculous in the dining room.”
Charlotte looked puzzled. “How is this different from him being totally ridiculous in the library or the weapons room or any of the other places he’s usually ridiculous?”

“Will pointed a finger accusingly in their direction. “You’re ganging up on me. Is this how it’s going to be from now on? I’ll be the odd man out? Dear God, I’ll have to befriend Jessamine.”
“Jessamine can’t stand you,” Jem pointed out.
“Henry, then.”
“Henry will set you on fire.”
