MINI MOVIE REVIEWS // it’s been too long so i’ve seen a lot of movies

So I was just browsing to see when I last did one of these and I realised it was LAST YEAR?? How did this even happen?? I blame it on myself for never posting.

Anyways, I want to revamp these posts a little more and make them a little more interesting, but I’m not sure how yet. Today I just have a lot of films to talk about, but plans are being made.

Anyways if you couldn’t tell by now I really love movies. I’m glued to my laptop 24/7 investing myself in fictional character’s lives. It’s fine, I’m fine. (Ruby please stop rambling). But enough of my rambling, let’s just get into the million movies I’ve seen in the last 6 months (!!) Excuse me if these are vague though because as I said it’s been a while.

X-Men: First Class

From what I remember of this movie (because I watched this like after New Years) was that I really loved it. I’ve become super obsessed with X-Men recently. Like really obsessed. They’re legit some of my favourite superhero movies. I loved how this one really ties historical elements into it, especially because I was studying the era it’s set in (1960’s during the Cold War) which was really cool. I love the characters and their development. I think the whole idea is so cool because they’re not really superheroes nor are they your typical ones anyway. It’s just great, I recommend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Okay so when I watched this movie, I didn’t remember a thing from when I first watched it so I had no idea what it was about. And OMG was I blown away. I wasn’t expecting anything and it was one of the best movies I’d seen in a while. It was so suspenseful and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved the plot and I usually do not like time-travel plotlines but I was so into this one. The one critique I have, which isn’t even really anything to do with this movie, is that the writers haven’t stayed coherent with the original trilogy. They are some plotholes, I won’t spoil anything but some of the elements of the story haven’t stayed consistent with the previous movies. But that’s about the worst thing I have to say about this movie because otherwise, it was BRILLIANT. If you haven’t seen X-Men yet then idk what you’re doing with your life, to be honest.

X-Men: Apocalypse

Now, unfortunately, I don’t have such positive thoughts surrounding the most recent instalment in the franchise. I really like the cast and I’m extremely excited for Dark Phoenix which is coming out in like a few days, but I didn’t like the plot of this movie at all. I just think it was poorly done compared to the rest of the films. But I’m very intrigued to see where they take Jean’s character and I love Sophie Turner and the guy who plays Scott whose name I can’t remember (it’s Tye Sheridan btw, I looked it up). I, of course, LOVE the OG cast too. But just the actual mythology and plot of this film itself was petty compared to the other movies. I love Quicksilver though! Ahhh he’s the best!!

Spiderman 1 & 2

As you can see I was on a Marvel kick. I just had the thought to rewatch the original Spiderman films with Toby McGuire. If you didn’t know, Peter Parker is my favourite bean ever and I think Spiderman is my favourite superhero. And I really enjoyed these ones. They really took me back. But I will say I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. I found them a bit slow. I still had a great time and I love the cast and all the characters. I also still need to watch the third one though.

The Amazing Spiderman

Yeah I know I’m very original. But it was on Netflix and I really wanted to rewatch it aswell. I again love the cast and I actually do like their take on Peter Parker. I love Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, especially their dynamic. I think it had a great villain even though he was a bit stupid. I found the movie to be funny and entertaining and I really loved it. I was going to watch the second one but I kinda don’t want to, 1) because of the ending but 2) my siblings were watching it and the 20 minutes I watched with them was super confusing.

Bohemian Rhapsody

You’ve heard of this movie, everybody was talking about it. And it’s of course as amazing as the reviews are telling you. I love Queen and I love the 70s. I thought the film was funny with just enough ‘drama’. I loved the characters and learning more about Queen because they have a really fascinating story. Freddie Mercury is amazing, very flawed, but still a queen. Hah I know I’m a pun master. It’s brilliant, need I say more? Yous should go and see it if you haven’t yet.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

So if you didn’t know, I decided to rewatch all the Star Wars films last year (well the first five) because I just thought that it had been a while and I wanted to see if I’d like them because at the time sci-fi scared me. And I was so pleasantly surprised because I had the best time. They’re low-key really bad, like the script is not good and you can tell they’re dated. But this film was so good! I loved it! I loved Han’s backstory and it was just a really fun heist. Emilie Clarke aka the queen was in it and she was so great. It’s just really good and I really loved it. I loved the humour and space adventures and the heist. Definitely, recommend if you haven’t seen it yet.

The Hate U Give

Boy did I wait way too long to a) read this book and b) read it so I could watch this phenomenal film. I know I’m terrible, I never read books on time. It’s just my thing at this point. But I started watching this movie thinking I’d just watch a few minutes and the next thing I know, I’d finished it and had only got a fifth through the book. I know, I watched the film before reading the book. But I don’t care because the book was just as phenomenal when I read it as well. It’s amazing, you don’t need me to tell you this. If you’re like me (probably not) and haven’t done yourself the favour of reading this book and watching this movie… well I do know what you’re doing with your life: being me haha. But this film is amazing and I loved it.

Maleficent

This was just another movie I wanted to rewatch because it was on Netflix and I was like “what the heck why not?!” And gosh was it amazing. I loved this movie. I loved the soundtrack and the twisty Sleeping Beauty retelling. I loved the cast, Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are a fantastic combo. And like a few weeks afterwards, they announced a sequel was coming. So like good timing. It was just really good and I highly recommend, especially if you like villain origin stories.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban / Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I had a slight crisis earlier this year because I thought that my love for HP was diminishing. Mainly because of JK Rowling but we’re not going to talk about that. So on a whim, I decided to watch one of the films I hadn’t seen in a while and it was of course as good as I remember. I just love my irrational and stupid little children. I fell back in love with them and remembered why the story is so good. And I hadn’t seen these specific two in ages as my personal favourites are the last ones so they’re the ones I rewatch the most. But PoA was amazing and I definitely see why its some people’s favourite. GoF was also great as always. I love the magic system but I’m really only here for my trio haha. They’re great, what else can I say? You know by now what its about or you truly are living under a giant and heavy rock if you don’t.

How To Train Your Dragon 3: Hidden World

I’ve never been a massive fan of this franchise but as soon as I saw this trailer for this film I was just so excited. So I went to go and see it and it’s beautiful as it looks. The animation is truly stunning. The score is also stunning. I love the characters and their relationships. I of course love the DRAGONS!! I was like crying by the end?? In the cinema too!! Which is a rare occasion for me. This movie was just incredible and I’m so sad that the series has come to an end because these movies are so great and I love them.

Life As We Know It

Again I watched this on a whim and I think I had watched it before but I didn’t remember a thing anyway, so I decided to rewatch it when I saw it on Netflix. And I love Katherine Heigl and I must say I really enjoyed this movie. The plot is really sad but the movie itself isn’t as sad as I thought it would be. Before I confuse you its about a mom and dad who pass away and leave their very young daughter to be looked after by their best friends who are both their godparents and have to live together and get along because they don’t like each other. But of course, there’s a romance and feelings ensue from there. It was a fun time, it’s not the best movie of all time but I still liked it.

The Perfect Date

This movie was one Netflix kept advertising and it stars Noah Centineo and Laura Maurano and I must say I was expecting so much more. I didn’t hate it but it was just a bit underwhelming. I liked the dynamic between the two main characters but I think it was a bit too petty for me? I’ve only seemed to like Noah into All The Boys, unfortunately. I did like the cinematography though, it was very pretty and colourful, just the movie didn’t impress me as much as it had the potential to.

The Last Song

I truly am like a broken record because almost all these movies I’ve seen before. But this one I haven’t seen in a while and back in the day when I borrowed it from the video store (haha) I remember really liking it. And even though it wasn’t my favourite I also quite liked it too. I thought it was really slow at times but I loved the character development and dynamics between all the characters. It is insta-love which I don’t know if I like or not, but I really liked the setting and the story itself.

Avengers: Endgame

This movie was all over the internet and I was peer pressured into watching this. I also didn’t want to get spoiled. And if you remember I said that I didn’t really love Infinity War as much as everyone else did because I found it made no sense?? But this movie was so much better. I actually really loved it. It was super long, haha but it was definitely worth it. The ending scenes were the best and I just had a really good time. My favourite character is, of course, Spiderman because I love Tom Holland and I am so EXCITED for Far From Home you don’t even know. I’m legit counting down the days and I want to go and see it on opening day. Anyways, I had a good time and am also really sad that this series is over too.

Safe Haven

After watching The Last Song I thought I should try another Nicholas Sparks movie so I picked this one remembering I really liked it back when I first watched it. But I was unfortunately also disappointed with this. I love the two main actresses, especially Cobie Smoulders but I don’t know, I just didn’t get the chemistry between the two main characters. I liked the relationship she had with the children but otherwise, I felt like it was too long?? I enjoyed it and at times I was  gripping my pillows gasping but other times I was bored… I have conflicted feelings.

Sky High

I don’t know why I had the urge to watch this movie, and I think it saw some parts of it when it was playing on Disney channel. And I wasn’t expecting much because like 2005 Disney is definitely considered quality film but I kind of liked it. I mainly watched it for superheroes. I mean it was okay. Nothing that special, the characters and plot were kind of stupid. So I don’t know why I don’t dislike it. It was a fun time, I rolled my eyes a lot. And the ship I wanted to sail didn’t but it’s fine haha.

Rise of The Guardians

I was legit just scrolling through Twitter one day and I saw someone tweet about this movie and I was like ahh I need to see it again. It’d been way too long. So it was on Netflix and I watched it and had the best time. It’s such a delightful movie. I love the character of Jack Frost, we all know I love my anti-villains. One thing I will say is though is that the voice actor – Chris Pine – seemed a bit old. I mean Jack is technically a teenager?? It’s not a big deal though. I liked the progression of the plot though and I just really loved this movie! The actual villain was great and I loved all the characters and the magicalness of it. So great!!

The Blind Side

This movie guys. THIS MOVIE. I remember watching this movie years ago and I remember that it was spectacular. And it truly is just as spectacular as it was when I saw it as a wee infant. It’s such a phenomenal film. Sandra Bullock is amazing. Lily Collins is also in it. I don’t actually know the other main character’s name but he was also so good (Quinton Aaron is his name, I also just looked him up). It’s just such a pure and brilliant movie and if you haven’t seen it then you don’t know what you’re missing. Go watch it now!!

Five Feet Apart

So I was finally able to see this movie after all the hype surrounding it made me want to find out what all the fuss was about. And I have mixed feelings. I really enjoy the actors and the story sounded interesting. Haley Lu Richardson also just looks like such a nice person and I really liked her character. The story is very similar to TFIOS which is one of my favourites. But its definitely different and has its own quirks. I loved the character of Poe the most which I did not expect. But yeah I really enjoyed this film. It wasn’t my favourite but I enjoyed certain aspects. I had a great time, I was scared the entire time because I didn’t want to cry my eyes out. I don’t want to spoil anything so I just go and watch it and you’ll understand me.

27 Dresses

So, funnily enough, I hadn’t seen this movie before. But I know so many people love this rom-com and I just have to watch all the rom-coms because I’m weak like that. So I watched this one and I liked enjoyed it actually. As I said earlier I love Katherine Heigl and I also really loved James Marden. I really liked the first three-quarters of this movie, the last bit just irritated me a little bit. But otherwise I had no issues, I enjoyed the plot and the characters were fun. It was a great time.

Me Before You

I have been loving Emilia Clarke lately and I remembered people saying that she did a brilliant job in this film, so I uh decided to rewatch it. Emilia did do an excellent job and I love her so much. I’m not sure how to describe my feelings. I liked the first bit but the last third-ish didn’t sit with me that well, I don’t know. I’m not sure what to feel really. I loved the cinematography and the outfits. And I also really love the soundtrack. It’s a nice movie, I don’t hate it but I also don’t LOVE it either.

Before Sunrise

Another romance film I had no idea existed and as soon as I heard about it, I immediately needed to see it. I also saw it was like 100% on Rotten Tomatoes so I was very excited. And I must say I positively charmed by this movie. I loved the characters so much. And the story just has so many layers. There are so many different morals and values that were discussed that I loved. It makes you think about your relationships with people and also really how one moment can truly change your entire life. It was just so good. A very slow film but it worked really well. It stars a young Ethan Hawke because its from the 90s and he’s great. I just really enjoyed it.

Before Sunset / Before Midnight

So of course when that movie ended I looked up what happened afterwards, and I won’t spoil anything, and I saw there were more. So I immediately needed to see them. The first sequel was so short, that like an hour in I was like “whoah wait it’s almost over”. I thought Sunset was really good though. It didn’t have as much of a plot but I liked that it was sort of just a small continuation of the first one, a check-up of sorts. And then I also enjoyed Midnight but its for sure the weakest of the three. Anyway, I had a great time. They’re so much more than I expected.

WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU SEEN RECENTLY? DO ALSO LIKE TO REWATCH MOVES? WHICH ONES DO YOU LOVE WATCHING OVER AND OVER? I’M VERY INTERESTED TO KNOW!
