Hauls

A LONG OVERDUE BOOK HAUL // part 1 (march to october) ft. book mail from publishers

I have had this post sitting in drafts for aeons at this point. I think my last book haul was back in like February?? It is now December so you get my situation. Welp, I guess better late than never.

Anyways, I think I’m going to start incorporating hauls into my recaps, it all depends. This may be my last haul but eh I change my mind all the time. It got a bit late and I didn’t manage to post this on time so I actually mentioned all the books I got in November in the recap already hehe.

Also, I’m super lazy BUT I will sprinkle in some photos of these books that I posted on Instagram, which if you don’t follow me there, you should. I also do haul ALL books over on my stories so feel free to stalk me. In  totally un-creepy way obviously *wink wink*

Without further ado, let us just get into this.

Skyward: The Story of Female Pilots in WWII by Sally Deng: This is actually a sort of children’s book that they gifted me when I was inquiring about the book below this one, and I was just like, you know,  this sounds super lovely so they sent it to me. I did just recently read it and I really enjoyed it. It’s a very easy story to consume that is very informative and such a great book for kids to read.

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson: I did a lil giveaway of this book a while ago and I still haven’t gotten the chance to read it BUT I know that it’s going to be great. I’ve been getting more and more into sci-fi and I’ve really been loving the intergalactic space adventures. I know the sequel is out soon so I might just binge them both. That’s always my favourite way to do it.

The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty: these books are so damn big which is why I haven’t gotten around to reading them. Also, high fantasy has been scaring me but Sabaa Tahir blurbed book one, which means I need to get off my butt and read them already.

The Steel Prince: Shades of Magic Volume 1 by V.E. Schwab & illustrated by Andrea Olimpieri: I’ve also already read this graphic novel. I had to after finishing the amazing trilogy that is the Shades of Magic. Because DAMN they were good. This one was also great and I’m super eager to read the next volume because I can’t with these cliffhangers.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer: this book has been EVERYWHERE and I’m just waiting for the right time to read like a sorta trashy and angsty fantasy romance. I did try it but I wasn’t in the mood for a Beauty and The Beast retelling. I will hopefully get to it sometime soon.

Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare (paperback edition): yeah I’ve already read this book, I read it when it came out. But JB surprised me with the new paperback edition when it came out here in SA. It’s like a miniature brick, and yes I do now own three copies of this book. It’s fine, everything’s fine.

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron: this book looks so damn amazing and it’s been a while since I’ve been so excited to pick up a fantasy. The author is super nice and all I know about this one is that it’s a West-African inspired YA fantasy and that there are witch doctors. I MUST READ IT ASAP! I’m super keen.

Find Me by André Aciman: I recently read Call Me By Your Name when I bought it at the Warehouse Sale, and I’m like obsessed with the film. One of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve ever seen. So I made the maybe bad decision to finally read it and it was as beautiful as the movie. Many tears were shed. I’ve already read this one so be on the lookout for my review coming soon.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through The Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll & illustrated by Minalima: I’m actually still in shock over this book. I did not expect it to arrive on my doorstep, JB sent me the Little Mermaid edition ages ago. And these books are just so stunning and I can’t wait to take some pretty pictures AHHH!! So grateful!!

A huge thanks to Jonathan Ball for spoiling me so much recently!

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid: one of my favourite books of this year, I loved it so much. I’m so super I got a chance to read this one!! Click here for my review!

Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi: I’ve also already read this one, this series is one of my guilty pleasures. These characters anger me a lot but I still love reading them.

The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon (movie tie-in edition): I also still need to read this one and I now have two copies so I need to get off my butt. I’ll probably take a weekend or something and read the book and then watch the film. Sounds like a great time!!

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi: I am so excited that this book is finally available here in South Africa because I’m so stoked to read this. I know it’s a super personal story and it’s going to be amazing.

The Tyrant’s Tomb: Trials of Apollo 4 by Rick Riordan: I truly need to get off my butt and finally start this series. I love Percy Jackson and both my younger siblings have read Trials of Apollo I HAVE FOMO. But when I do I know I’m going to have a grand old time.

A huge thanks to the Penguin Random House South Africa team for sending these books my way!

On The Come Up by Angie Thomas: Pan Mac are the literal best people ever and I love them so much!! They very kindly sent me one the last remaining ARCs they had left of this bad boy, which I haven’t gotten to yet but still!! It’s also SO floppy which is amazing. I’m super stoked to get to it, hopefully soon, because I’ve heard amazing things.

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding & The Last Life of Prince Alastor by Alexandra Bracken: I absolutely adore Alex’s books (they’ve also sent me all the books in the Darkest Minds series!!) and even though the spooky season is over, I’m wanting to read more middle grade. I know these ones will be great.

Dry by Neal & Jarrod Shusterman: I haven’t read Scythe, which is where you all know Neal. BUT this book is about a drought which is a problem very prominent where I live so this one seemed really good. I did start it a while back and I really need to pick it up again because it was super addictive.

Viper by Bex Hogan: this is an ARC that was sent to me unsolicited that seems pretty cool. All I know is that it’s got islands and the ocean. I know I’m really bad at synopses whoops.

The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G. Drews: Pan Macmillan really is the best because they sent me TWO copies of this book, both an ARC and a finished copy and I just,,, this book was one of my favourites of the year, it absolutely broke me and JUST READ IT. You can take a peek at my review here!

Field Notes On Love Jennifer E. Smith: I haven’t read of this author’s books but Jenny Han blurbed this and it sounds so good? I know it involves train rides and breakups. Plus the main character was like one of like sextuplets or something, which I’ve NEVER seen before and sounds so great. It’s also super short so I might read it this summer.

Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds: I had never heard of this one BUT this author is one of the nicest people ever. We interacted a couple of times on social media and I just really want to read his book. This one is a contemporary that involves time travel?!? I’ve heard really great things and I MUST read it before the end of the year.

Kick The Moon by Muhammad Khan: okay not gonna lie, I know NOTHING about this but it’s super shot and I saw one of the author’s other books going around a while ago. Some of my friends read it and really liked it so I’m very intrigued to give this one a go!

Heartstopper Volume 1 by Alice Oseman: this book was the most adorable and soft story ever and I loved it SO MUCH! I loved the art style and the romance melts you. SO GOOD! I LOVED IT!!

Everless & Evermore by Sara Holland: Pan Mac were so kind enough to send me finished copies of this duology and I’m going to have the best trashy time of my life. I read the first book last year and I really enjoyed it, and I’ve been wanting to read book two. But I… don’t remember like anything from the first one. So I’m going to binge read this series and I’m very interested to see if I still like them.

Ghosts of The Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, Kelly Link, Sarah Rees Brennan, Robin Wasserman: ahhh I can’t believe they sent me this!! I love the Shadowhunter series, I’m the most basic trash ever I know. But I love our protagonist in this book and I always love revisiting my fave characters. I actually really like these short story collections and seeing little snippets so super excited to finally get to this. I’m a couple of books behind at the moment and I NEED to catch up. It’s bad luck.

We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal: I was so stoked when this arrived on my doorstep because it’s one of my most anticipated books this year. The author is super nice and I really want to read more books from POC authors. Also, Arabian fantasy sounds so interesting!

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Illustrated by Faith Erin Hicks: this book!! This book is probably my favourite graphic novel EVER. I adored it and ahhh I’m just so excited to have read it *insert heart eyes*

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell: I’ve mentioned this like everywhere at this point but um they sent me an EARLY finished copy of this book which is like my most anticipated book of this year and I… am still screaming tbh. Pan Mac literally made my day, month, year. I mean I actually should’ve probably waited to read this because it was actually torture reading this before anyone else but STILL!!!!

Pan Macmillan, you already know I love you, the BIGGEST thanks for always spoiling me.

The Choice Between Us by Edyth Bulbring

NB is so nice, they’re a local publishing house, one of the Tafelberg imprints, who obviously publish books by South African authors. I love supporting local authors. I believe this one is a YA thriller set in Johannesburg. I know there are dual timelines and it seems super intriguing. Can’t wait to read!

Thanks, NB Publishers for sending this to me!

Again, a huge thanks to the publishers. who always make me feel so special. I really appreciate all these amazing books.

Oh and keep your eyes open for part two of this haul coming soon, where I mention books I’ve bought, some gifts and also my Bargain Books Warehouse Sale finds.

WHAT WAS THE MOST RECENT BOOK YOU HAULED? HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THE ONES I MENTIONED? DID I HAUL ANY OF YOUR FAVOURITES? LET ME KNOW!
