MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK RELEASES FOR THE REST OF 2020 // crushing our tbrs with stunning covers and exciting releases

This post is apparently becoming an annual tradition on the blog. Love that for us.

Welp we’re a few days a week late but I’m here anyway. Better late than never amirite?

There are… many more than I thought so I apologise to everybody’s tbr. Especially my own as I’ll probably only get to these in like 3 years because I’m terrible with new releases whoops.

There are some PHENOMENAL books that are still coming out, at least I hope they are going to be. So without further ado, let us get into it!!

Causes you need to care about:

Quick August Releases

You Had Me At Hola by Alexis Daria (4 August 2020): I have heard such lovely things about this adult romance and it sounds so up my alley!! It’s about movie stars, which already has me hooked, and I found it super cheap on my Kindle so… *crossing fingers*

Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland (11 August 2020): honestly have not heard all that much about this book, but I have an ALC copy and it sounds like a ton of fun. The title is so cool and I love it and it’s a magical realism/sci-fi kinda premise. I am ~intrigued~.

Star Daughter by Shevta Thekrar (11 August 2020): I’ve been wanting to read this book ever since I found about it early this year, it’s one of my most anticipated releases and I’m still not over this cover. All I know is that it’s a Hindu-inspired mythological fantasy and it’s about the daughter of a star (wow Ruby, who would’ve guessed??). But it also has such great reviews and I’m so hyped to get my hands on it.

Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn (18 August 2020): this book sounds like the most adorable thing ever and I want it in my life. All I need to know is that it has fake-dating and I’m sold.

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko (18 August 2020): as we all know, high fantasy scares me and I rarely pluck up the courage to read it. But EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOTHER has been raving about this debut and I would like to know why. But it also does sound fantastic, and I have it on audiobook so hopefully will get to it soon and love it also.

Darius The Great Deserves Better by Adib Khorram (25 August 2020): I have not read this first book yet, I have it on my shelf but I 99.9% sure I’m gonna love and obviously want to pick up the sequel.

SEPTEMBER

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin (1 September 2020): My body is very ready for this angsty sequel to cheer my spirits and fill me with romantic yearning and single-ness. You may close the door behind you.

Majesty by Katherine McGee (1 September 2020): I haven’t managed to get to book one yet, though I literally just hauled it and have a feeling I’m going to want to devour/marathon this duology. I’ve heard they’re super addictive and fun and ahh can’t wait for a good time.

Punching The Air by Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salam (1 September 2020): I just this year read one of Ibi Zoboi’s novels and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I hear this is a book written in verse!! Which I have been loving and am on the lookout for more. That’s it. That’s all I need to know.

Recommended for You by Laura Silverman (1 September 2020): I originally wasn’t too interested in this book until Marie gave this a glowing review and now I need it in my life. This book is about rival teen booksellers?!?! Hello, I would like to live in this dream.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (1 September 2020): I AM SO READY FOR THIS BOOK!! And I need it now. Please and thank you. Gays accidentally summoning a ghost?? Hell yeah. Trans and Latinx rep? Love to see it. *makes grabby hands*

Lost Book of The White by Cassandra Clare & Wesley Chu (1 September 2020): welp still need to read book one but I know I shall love it because… Malec!! I think this is set after… not sure when and I can’t remember the timeline lmao #fakefan. But Imma read it.

Summer of Everything by Julian Winters (8 September 2020): this book sounds absolutely wonderful and I’ve heard such wonderful things about this author. It involves a bookstore, old music and a cute queer romance. Sign me up.

Early Departures by Justin A. Reynolds (22 September 2020): I have such a good feeling about this author and I’ve been meaning to get to his debut for ages. It sounds absolutely fantastic. So, of course, I want to read this one too. They have a similar premise by the looks of things, a contemporary with a touch of sci-fi and I’m into it.

Skyhunter by Marie Lu (29 September 2020): I honestly thought this was an adult novel idk why. Anyways, I have an early audiobook of this one so ~hopefully~ can read before it comes out. I’m a tad behind on Marie’s book, still need to get to Kingdom of Back. And honestly do not understand the synopsis because I’m dumb. It’s heavy sci-fi but also lowkey right up my alley.

OCTOBER

We Were Restless Things by Cole Nagamatsu (6 October 2020): this cover can please stomp on me, whatever it pleases really, because I am a deceased human being. I know next to nothing except magical realism, maybe queer, and I want to keep it that way and be surprised.

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab (6 October 2020): I HAVE AN EARC!! REPEAT: I HAVE AN EARC!! And I am SCREAMING. Why they accepted me I truly do not know. STILL SCREAMING.

Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend (15 October 2020): need to read book two asap so I can be ready for this one eeepp. The first book was so delightful to read and I’m so excited to continue with the series.

NOVEMBER

Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer (3 November 2020): This cover is SO COOL ermygosh. I had this one on my original 2020 releases post and it still sounds brilliant. This one is about a girl who can cast karma on anyone she pleases, which is so cool and I’m very intrigued to see what Marissa Meyer does with this contemporary?? Could be light sci-fi… maybe??

A Cuban’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey (10 November 2020): firstly, obsessed with this title AND cover. So adorable. Secondly, it involves baking. And I need it in my life.

Rent A Boyfriend by Gloria Chao (10 November 2020): um hello did we see this cover?? Because HOW ADORABLE! I haven’t read from this author before, but I’ve meaning to for ages. This book is set at college and it has fake dating (RENT a boyfriend *wink wink*) and I… need to read it.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (17 November 2020): more SCREAMING because I also got approved an eARC AND I AM SO SO SO EXCITED!! I’ve heard stellar things about this one and it sounds so good. I LOVE historical fiction and I’m especially interested in this 1920s Shanghai setting. It’s also a Romeo & Juliet retelling so there should be romance and I,,, ah ready to sell my soul to this book RIGHT NOW.

Super Fake Love Song by David Yoon (19 November 2020): I’ve been so excited to read Frankly In Love, which needs to happen asap before this comes out.  I managed to snag an eARC of this one too (they were available on Edelweiss for download). I don’t know all that much about this apart from it involving music, which is all I really needed to know

How The King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black (24 November 2020): Not much of an explanation needed here. Just Cardan. And much excitement. Send tweet.

DECEMBER

A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha (1 December 2020): all I know is that a) the cover is stunning, b) it’s a Portuguese fantasy and c) there’s a f/f romance. Sounds good to me.

A Sky Beyond The Storm by Sabaa Tahir (1 December 2020): I didn’t realise this was coming out so early (though the UK date is the 10th). I,,, have not caught up just yet, I’m busy with my Ember reread. But you can bet yourself that I will be by the time it does come out and I shall also be crying endless amounts of tears. Somebody prepare my tombstone.  And wish me my soul luck.

Other posts with more releases:

And that is it. This took freaking 15000 thousand years to format with a lot of copy/paste-ing. Love that for me. But I ~think~ I got them all. Scream at me if not lmao

WHAT BOOKS ON THIS LIST ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT? HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THEM? WHAT DID YOU THINK? WHAT RELEASES THAT ARE NOT ON HERE ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT? I’D LOVE TO KNOW!

Happy reading

  • Sumedha

Almost half the list is on my TBR and I’m going to hold off on adding more 😅 I’m really looking forward to A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow because it sounds super cute. And I’m hoping to read Darius book 2 soon since I read 1 recently and loved it.

Also, isn’t Would Like to Meet already out? I read it a while back 😅

    • Ruby Rae Reads

I truly apologise Sumedha, for doubling your tbr. But also NO I NEED SOMEONE TO CRY WITH hehehe.

Cuban Girl’s Guide just sounds like an absolute delight. Oh yay, so amped to read the Darius series xx

  • Caro @ bookcheshirecat

I loved reading what end of the year releases you’re excited for 🥰 I have heard so many amazing things about Raybearer as well and I’m getting so excited about it!! I also hope to read Darius The Great Deserves Better, Recommended to You and Cemetery Boys soon! 😊

  • Xandra @ Starry Sky Books

I absolutely need to read all of these books as well! (expect for Cemetery Boys because I already read it and 10/10 recommend to everyone, but I wouldn’t mind reading it again forever 🥰) Especially Sia Martinez, Raybearer, and King of Elfhame. Yes please.

Congratulations on your Addie La Rue eArc!! That’s amazing! I hope you enjoy it! 😊 I am also terrible at reading new releases, haha. I might try to read them when they release… but then it actually takes me a year or two to read it officially. 😅

    • Ruby Rae Reads

Xandra, omg yay I AM SO READY FOR CEMETERY BOYS!! Especially because you’ve raved about it *happy dance* also omg read it forever LOVE THAT

Also, so excited for our Vicious buddy read, which really want to get to before Addie hehe. And still shock that I ACTUALLY got accepted and I’m lowkey still gobsmacked

Literally leave books on my tbr for years and honestly it’s a bad habit. We should fix that haha

  • Sara @ Words With Wings

RUBY hello! i’m so sorry that i am the absolute worst at commenting! i swear i have read everyone of your posts, i just suck at commenting! please don’t hate me. 🥺

anyways, first of all (two transitional phrases in one sentence? pretend you don’t see it.) congrats on getting an arc for these violent delights and addie larue! i have an arc for tvd that i haven’t gotten to yet, and i am hiiighly anticipating addie larue! i really hope you love them! ❤

of the books you’ve mentioned, i’ve only read star daughter (indian rep, you know i love it!), sia martinez (lowkey hated it, but lowkey loved it at the same time? you know what i mean?), and raybearer (LOVED IT) but honestly, there are so many good books and just! not enough time! and if i don’t stop thinking about all the good books i might be missing out on, i’m going to succumb to intense fomo and have an existential crisis and… i should just stop lmao.

    anyways, loved this post! ❤

(last thing — remember when i talked about re-doing my blog design? i… did it 😳)

    • Ruby Rae Reads

omg, thank you, thank you, thank you for your kindest comment!!! You’re the absolute best 💕 and I DEFINITELY DO NOT HATE YOU OF COURSE NOT!!!

Omg, yay for also getting an ARC of These Violent Delights (lmao you saying TVD immediately made me think vampire diaries). Hope we both love them, I’m 99.9% sure we will hehe. Crossing fingers and toes.

Eeeeppp okay, even more excited since you loved Star Daughter ans Raybearer. Though oop,,, okay I guess we’ll see what I think about Sia Martinez. There seriously are just SO MANY BOOKS and I… lowkey don’t know what I’m going to do. Pray for me. We’re both just permanently having an existential crisis welp. Pray for us both tbh

      Again, you’re amazing ilysm <3<3<3

  • Charis @ Charis Rae

SIAMARTINEZSIAMARTINEZ I wanna read that one so badly! *splutters* I need my hands on it right this second 😂 Anyhoo, thank you SO much for compiling this list, Ruby! I’ve been reading a lot of backlist books or my favorites to re-read, and I’ve honestly forgotten about the rest of the 2020 releases. Especially excited for new books from Sabaa Tahir and Marie Lu!

    • Ruby Rae Reads

Ah, Sia sounds so so cool!! Hope we both love. Eeeepp yay glad I could be of help. I’ve been severly lacking in backlist titles this year because of all the rereads haha *nervous sweats*

  • plantyofpages

Wow this is such a stunning list! I may have just added so many books to my TBR because of it haha. I just ordered a copy of Recommended For You and I am so so so excited to dive into it once it arrives! Wonderful post <3

  • Marta @ the book mermaid

This list is so good!! I wanna read These Violent Delights and A Curse of Roses SO BADLY and I’m super interested in You Had Me At Hola, too. <3 I have been hearing lots of great things about Star Daughter too, though I wasn't really aware of it – I might have to check it out! I've already read Majesty and it was very disappointing, sadly. I loved American Royals, and Majesty seemed like a very poor and frustrating sequel / ending )): I do hope you like it more than I did! 🙂

    • Ruby Rae Reads

Thank you Marta <3<3 omg RIGHT?!?! Hope they're as amazing as they sound. Ah if you do read Star Daughter, would love to know what you think, I can't wait to read.

Oh no, so sad you didn't like it. I've been hearing it's disappointing. Maybe if I go in with low expectations haha

  • Lais @ The Bookish Skies

the cover for a sky beyond the storm is so different from the rest of the series i didn’t even recognize it at first. i really hoped i’d be caught up in the series by the time the 4th one came around, but just recently they announced that the third book is going to be translated, so it will probably take some time before i can read it.

also: the cover for super fake love song looks so beautiful! i really want to read frankly in love before this one comes out, but it looks so good already from the premise!

    • Ruby Rae Reads

Ah sorry I’m replying so late, ily and your lovely comments!!

Oh hehe, that Sky cover is the UK edition as its the one I’ll be getting to match my set. But also, don’t worry, I’m not caught up either WE CAN DO I.

YES!! Love that cover too, serious 80s vibes. And same, I also still need to read Frankly and I’m super excited to. I think its going to be a fave <3<3

  • May @ Forever and Everly

i’m so excited for all of these books!! these violent delights is definitely my most anticipated release now, though i’m trying to adjust my expectations so they’re not too high lmao. and i hadn’t been super interested in raybearer, but all the raving reviews recently have definitely made me a lot more hyped for it!

    • Ruby Rae Reads

ugh May there are just so many great books coming out. I’m SO READY for These Violent Delights, literally just about to start reading because I can’t resist. Seriously hope it doesn’t disappoint you. ME TOO. I usually don’t do high fantasy, or rather I rarely reach for it, but all the rave reviews have made me super keen <3<3

  • Marie

Ahh thank you so so much for mentioning my post and ahh I’m so happy I could get you excited about Recommended for you, it was such a lovely read I can’t wait to hear what you think of it! <3 I am SO eager to read A Curse of Roses as well, it sounds like such a good book. And Darius AH the first book just was so good, I can't wait to get back with Darius he's such a wonderful character <3

    • Ruby Rae Reads

Love you lots Marie!! Your post for sure helped me out in finding the releases hehe

I,,, okay I tried Recommended For You on my kindle but I wasn’t loving it. It might have been my mood and might try again another time but yeah. IM SORRY
