JUNE RECAP // assignment mania, audiobooks & end of semester
Hi hello there and how are we doing today?
You’re probably bored by the number of times I open recaps with “I’m trying to stay on top of these” but I really am trying. Better than posting midway through the month with a double recap.
Anyways, let’s just get started!
Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert {★★★★☆}: Would you believe it if I told you that I actually listened to this book on audio? Because I wouldn’t. I technically read it alongside the ebook, but still! *pats self on the back* Anyways, this book was for sure my favourite of the Brown Sisters series. She was so so so cute. I’m planning on doing a whole review so I won’t say much. Just know I loved the writing and the characters and it was all ADORABLE. Big thanks to Harper Collins for the eARC via Netgalley and ALC via Libro.fm <3<3
Counting Down With You by Tashie Bhuiyan {★★★½☆}: eyyy look I finally finished it!! Took literally forever to read the final 20% of this book because I’m a terrible human. Anyways, this was such a fun YA contemporary. I loved the characters and the anxiety representation. The romance was also cute. Though it became quite cheesy toward the end, which is why I ultimately didn’t give it a higher rating. Big thanks to Inkyard Press for the eARC via Netgalley and Turn The Pages Tours for having me on the IG tour!
Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga {★★★★☆}: Read this one for my English class and omg was she amazing!! The writing and characters were phenomenal and I’m super proud of my essay. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a feminist African classic!!
Huge thanks to Penguin Random House South Africa for the spoils:
- Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
- Kate In Waiting by Becky Albertalli
- The Yearbook by Holly Bourne
From the awesome people at Pan Macmillan for these lovelies:
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
- Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo
- Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo
- Heartstopper Volumes 1, 2, 3 & 4 by Alice Oseman
I have a second-hand book buying problem:
- Becoming by Michelle Obama
- Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
- Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno
- Percy Jackon & The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
- Percy Jackon & The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
- Percy Jackon & The Battle of The Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
- Percy Jackon & The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan
- The Secret History by Donna Tartt
LORDE RELEASED A NEW SONG AND I AM NOT OKAY!!!!!! She is perfection and I needed the album to drop like yesterday.
Also, I stumbled down a rom-com rabbit hole again and just rewatched a bunch of faves oops.
The only new movie I watched was Cruella which was… SO MUCH FUN OMG!!
I honestly don’t have all that much to say here. Technically, as I type this, I’ve finished the semester, but that didn’t actually happen in June. Super glad about it though because June was far too stressful. Like that semester was ROUGH and I had assignment upon assignment upon assignment last month. It was A LOT and though I did survive, it wasn’t easy.

Okay this story is perhaps bizarre. But yes I have read Heartstopper, but only the first two volumes. I read them as they came out, so quite far apart. Anyways, because I remember basically nothing, the plan is to take a day and just devour them all and I'M EXCITED *cries happy tears*
SOLAR POWER IS LITERALLY SO AMAZING WTF I NEED MORE PLS MY LORDE!!!!!!!!!!!
Cruella is so much fun omg! Lemme know what you think because I'd be so interested. I haven't seen that many people talk about it so I don't know the general consensus haha
Also, apology not accepted because I'm 100000% the same and you're not allowed to change. Okay ilysm bye xoxoxoxoxo

I get you celebrating finishing the semester way after it ends haha. I’m STILL technically celebrating being done with college. Why should I stop celebrating within a year when I had to go through it for 4 years lol.
You liked Lorde’s song? I unfortunately didn’t 😬 the song and the mv were just.. not it for me lol. But at least I have Renegade by Big Red Machine ft. Taylor Swift to keep me happy now.
Ruby Rae Reads
Welp apologies about this being so late!!!! I’ve been horrid with comments but omg YAY FOR BEING DONE!! I hope you’ve been having a break?
Ah so sorry you didn’t love her song. The rest of the album is technically now out, what did you think?
Lots of love xoxoxo
Caro @ bookcheshirecat
June was also such a busy month for me, I’m ready for the semester to be over! Happy to see that you hauled Heartstopper, I love these graphic novels! I also have Legendborn on my TBR 🥰 I hope you’re having a good July ❤

Ugh Caro, I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to reply. I’ve been terrible with comments *hides*
But yay!!! I’m so glad you had a good June. I’m so excited to continue with Heartstopper series eeeep. I’ve been wanting to for ages and the plan is to reread the first 2 and just keep going hehe
Lots of love to you xoxoxo
Lais @ The Bookish Skies
yayyy, i’m so glad you had a great month & also a good experience with counting down with you! i read this one back in may and while i didn’t love it, i thought the anxiety rep was super well done and obv very relevant.
heartstopper is coming out in my country and i’ll finally get a chance to have a physical copy of it!!! i am so excited! i hope it goes well and they publish the other volumes as well, it would be lovely to have the collection, especially with how pretty the shelves look!
lorde’s solar power is AMAZING and i can not wait for the whole album! i have to admit tho i’ve been terrible at keeping up with disney’s latest works and i have not watched cruella, raya OR luca yet, which is a shame! i need to get on to it already, hope i can do so during my vacation break.
hope you have a great july, ruby! ❤️❤️❤️
Ruby Rae Reads
Lais oh my gosh I am SO SO SO SORRY for this incredibly late reply, I’ve been horrid with comments lately *hides* But thank you for stopping by, always love having you around <3<3<3
Ahh I’m kinda lowkey glad that you agree on Counting Down With You, it didn’t exactly live up to all of my expectations either welp. But ahhh yay for Heartstopper. It technically wasn’t out in mine either, only now. I’m so pumped to continue with the series.
Omg glad you also love Solar Power. The album has obvs since come out and I’m SO into it. Ah I also need to get to Luca, it looks brilliant *insert heart eyes* hope you love the other two, I really enjoyed
You the bestest, lots of love xoxoxo

Veronika @ Wordy and Whimsical
I also read Act Your Age, Eve Brown in June and damn, that book was fantastic! I listened to the audiobook and it was such a good experience, so I think it was a great decision to listen to that next to reading the ebook. 😀 I’m really looking forward to Counting Down With You, so it’s disappointing to hear that the end is pretty cheesy. :/ I’m going to go into it prepared for that now. Hope you’re having a great July. Yay for the end of your semester! 🙂
Ruby Rae Reads
Welp Veronika, so so so sorry for taking this long to reply to you. I’ve been horrible with comments but thank you for stopping by <3<3
The audiobook for Eve Brown was so wonderful right?! Such an enjoyable experience. Hope you love Counting Down With You as much as I did, I think I’m just growing out of younger YA contemporary haha
Lots of love to you xoxoxoxo
