Synopsis:
Torn apart by war. Reunited by love?
Two weeks have passed since Iris returned home bruised and heartbroken from the front, but the war is far from over.
Roman is missing, lost behind enemy lines, with no memory of his past, or Iris. Hoping his memories return, he begins to write again – but this time for the enemy.
When a strange letter arrives through his wardrobe door, he strikes up a correspondence with a penpal who seems at once mysterious… and strangely familiar.
As their connection deepens, the two of them will risk their very hearts and futures to change the tides of the war.

STAR RATING: (5 out of 5 stars)

You know that meme from Family Guy where the dude goes “time to get some sleep,” rolls over and just cries? If you looked for my reaction any more accurate than that one you wouldn’t ever find it…
Those last few chapters… it’s been like a week and I’m still sobbing. Will I ever recover? Probably not. What a stupid book actually. The worst actually. Not soul-crushing at all.
I mentioned in my review of Divine Rivals that the world-building had been slightly unclear at times but that it made so much sense in this book. That is indeed correct and I will also add that I LOVED how it all lines up! Genius. ITS A WAR OF THE GODS PEOPLE! Are you not listening?
It’s hard to review a sequel without spoiling too much but I shall try my best folks. But if you haven’t read book one, yeah don’t stay here. Leave right now.
You’re still here. I said scoot, scedaddle, vamoose.
Okay so everyone dies.
I SAID LEAVE!!!!

Now let’s actually get into this review. Because what a shift from the first book? It’s been like 2 weeks and I still haven’t collected my thoughts after this whirlwind. I mean it was amazing. But I’m certainly not okay. Can we just end the review there?
I mentioned in my thoughts on the last book that I was pacing my room often. Let’s just say that brought over to this reading experience also. And add in a few anxiety attacks. That about sums up this book for me. I mentioned I’m not okay?
Let’s lighten this mood and talk about how the plot was PLOTTING! Like frfr. Yes I am Gen Z, deal with it. But indeed, everything was happening all the time and I was not catching up in time and it was a lot. So brava to Rebecca for the superb pacing in this book and for possibly giving me heart problems.
I only talked a smidge about Forest in my last review because spoilers. But here I am free and I have THOUGHTS. Lmao not actually that many but enough to say how confused I was about this man. Up and down emotions all the time tbh.
Idk how her writing also somehow got better? But I was dead on the floor no jokes. Just go look at the quotes and weep with me. They were so beautiful? We love a simple yet lyrical writing style in this household and I just needed to get that out there.
WE ARE IN A WAR AND I AM NOT CHILL!!!!! Bro what in the,,,,, MIND = BLOWN
Every single star for world-building and plot structure, because never was there a dull moment in this book. This review only has mild spoilers so I shan’t be telling you how the book ends, but there is a lot of fighting and political turmoil and it… is a lot. Also always being with Dacre was a whole lot and I didn’t expect to always be stressed near this god-man…
Moment of silence for Roman and Iris. Who were out to get me. I was not okay, and I never will be ever again. They actually wanted to give me a heart attack. And they did. I think I fainted a few times. They can step on me and I’d accept it!!!
Don’t know how she did it, but Rebecca Ross defied all expectations and if you’re looking for a new YA fantasy series with excellent world-building, gorgeous writing and a soul-crushing romance to sink your teeth into, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Read it so we can cry together *hides*

“Sometimes,” Iris began, “I don’t think we know what we’re made of until the worst moment possible happens. Then we must decide who we truly are and what is most important to us. I think we’re often surprised by what we become.”
🗞️
“Soon it would be night; the stars would pierce the sky like nails, and he would light the candles and write by fire because the words came easier in the darkness.”
🗞️
“Let me be your secret, then. Tuck my words into your pocket. Let them be your armor.”
🗞️
“A song that will remind me that even when I feel lost, the birds still sing, the moon still waxes and wanes, and the seasons still cycle.”
🗞️
“Their souls weren’t mirrors but complements, constellations that burned side by side.”

HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK? OR JUST THE FIRST ONE? WHAT DID YOU THINK? DO YOU ALSO LOVE IRIS AND ROMAN? I’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS!
